Mark in Cuba

Hello,
I’m Mark. I live in Edmonton. I’m 34 year old and work as an audio and computer tech for Alberta Education. I have always wanted to go to Cuba and had it on my must-do list for years. The plan was to visit Cuba before it changes – that’s it. All I knew was that I must go to Cuba before it turns from this old school island where the time stopped in late 1950’s and hasn’t moved since. I wanted to experience Cuba before it would turn into a complete tourist resort no different from any other Caribbean country.
Sadly enough, the plan and intentions were there – what was missing was the action. It wasn’t until last minute that I eventually slammed my fist on the table, picked up my stuff and took off. See, I had all the excuses in the world as to why I couldn’t do it now. I was always too busy, or needed to use money on something else – each time an excuse until 2008 knocked on the door and with Fidel Castro stepping down and new US president taking Oval Office, I knew I had to do it now or miss the boat.
And so I did. I started my research, found out all there was to know about Cuba, purchased the ticket and went for what was to become a trip of a lifetime. Cuba in its purest form. I caught the best of it exactly the way I wanted to – before big change. And I was given a glimpse of real Cuba. Not the veil that is put before the eyes of an average tourist who stays on a beach in Varadero. I have seen and lived through the true ups and downs of the country, been and done what most people who visit Cuba don’t even know existed.
I’m glad you took time to visit my site and hope you enjoyed sharing the adventures with me – if not in person, at least in your mind. And I hope to hear from you. If you have visited Cuba, share your experiences from the country. If you are planning to visit and need advice, do not hesitate to contact me. If you are unsure if Cuba is for you – you gotta be kidding me. Cuba is so beautiful, so pristine and so different, there is no other country that can offer you the same. You can learn a lot about the country on this website. But the best way to learn is to live it. Don’t be a procrastinator like I had been before I actually went. The time is now. Hurry to Cuba before it changes. And let me know how it went for you. And maybe we can meet up somewhere in Havana. I know a good spot with awesome Mojitos. I’ll even eat your herbs if you don’t want it.
